Ten Favourite Films of 2000

Claire Denis' "Beau Travail"

They’re list-o-maniacs over at In Review Online. Their Yearbook project maddened me, but the result sure is pretty and I’m glad I participated. Here, in a digestible bit, are my ten favourite films of 2000 (watch this space next week for 2001). Films are listed in alphabetical order, and ‘year’ is determined over at InRO by a movie’s first US release, limited or wide (not festivals or exclusive screenings).

Battle Royale, directed by Kinji Fukasaku (Japan)

Beau Travail, directed by Claire Denis (France)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee (Taiwan)

Dancer in the Dark, directed by Lars Von Trier (Denmark)

Full Blast, directed by Rodrigue Jean (Canada)

The Idiots, directed by Lars Von Trier (Denmark)

Pitch Black, directed by David Twohy (US)

Unbreakable, directed by M. Night Shyamalan (US)

The Wind Will Carry Us, directed by Abbas Kiarostami (Iran)

Yi Yi: A One and a Two…, directed by Edward Yang (Taiwan)
